(GLB) The Girls Life Brigade - membership badge (1950’s / 1960’s)
The Girl’s Life Brigade (GLB) was originally founded in Ireland in 1893, later in England in 1902 by the National Sunday Schools Union (NSSU) and in Scotland 1900 as The Girl’s Guildry. They operated as Christian organisations for young women on the scouting model and in 1965 all three were amalgamated to form the Girl’s Brigade.
The original aim of the GLB was stated as “to help encourage girls to become responsible self-reliant, useful young women”. GLB members were known as cadets and membership was grouped according to age; Juniors (9 - 12), Seniors (13 - 14) and Pioneers (14 and older).
