2013 50 cent 100 Years of Commonwealth Stamps carded coin
Not struck for circulation this coin was issued to mark the centenary of the first Commonwealth postage stamp issues in 1913. Australia’s first national stamp issue had a troubled beginning. A decade after the federation of Australia's six colonies the Postmaster-General’s Department sought designs for the young nation's first stamps which would in time replace colonial and state stamp issues. After more than a year of submissions and political debate the Kangaroo and Map postage stamps were finally released in 1913.
The reverse design depicts stylised Kangaroo and Map Penny Red Stamp with a standing kangaroo placed over a map of Australia which in turn is extruded over a representation of a postage stamp.
The coin is encapsulated on an official Royal Australian Mint card containing information about the history of Australian banknotes.
