2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Torres Strait Islander Flag being officially proclaimed as a Flag of Australia.
Designed by the late Bernard Namok in 1992, the flag holds deep cultural and historical significance for Torres Strait Islander people. Its colours reflect identity and connection to Country: green represents the land, blue symbolises the sea, and black stands for the people. At the centre, the traditional Dhari (headdress) and five-pointed star represent cultural heritage and the five major island groups of the Torres Strait. Officially recognised in 1995, the flag has since become a powerful symbol of pride, unity, and resilience.
To commemorate this important anniversary, the Royal Australian Mint has released a limited-edition coin struck to its high uncirculated finish standard.
