2001 $1 80th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force RAAF coin on card
These are some of the most sought after RAM issues.
This 2001 commemorative coin marks the 80the anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force and pays tribute to the many Australians, past and present, who have served their country. Although the RAAF was formed in 1921, its origins date back to 1911 when it was decided that aviation should be developed within the armed forces. As a result, the Central Flying School at Point Cook , Victoria was established in 1912.
This decision facilitated the Australian Flying Corps to become part of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Although the Central Flying School continued from its Point Cook base, military flying had practically ceased until the Army formed the Australian Air Corps in 1920. At this time plans were drawn up for the establishment of a permanent air force - a third force equal with the Navy and Army. On 31 March 1921 the Australian Air Force was formed with King George V approving the prefix 'Royal' shortly after.
The Royal Australian Air Force began operations on 31 August 1921 becoming just the second Royal air arm, after Britain's RAF, to be formed within the British Commonwealth of Nations. This beautifully designed coin is a worthy addition to Australia 's most widely collected series.
