2016 Battle of Long Tan 50th Anniversary Penny

This specially minted 1966 - 2016 Long Tan penny remembers one of the most noted battles of the Vietnam War.

At 4pm on 18th August 1966, 108 men of D Coy. 6RAR, confronted an opposing force of some 2000 Vietnamese in the rubber plantation at Long Tan.

In torrential rain D Coy. maintained relentless fire. RAAF 'Hueys" dropped ammunition, while Australian, NZ and American artillery rained on the enemy.

After three hours the battle was won.

The courage, mate ship and determination of the 108 and those who rallied to their support, has come to represent all who served in the Vietnam War.

In 1966 the iconic Australian Kangaroo penny was replaced by decimal currency.
