Made to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, this five-shilling piece features an obverse design by the sculptor and engraver Gilbert Ledward RA. It features a portrait of Her Majesty mounted on her horse Winston, with The Queen dressed in her uniform as Colonel in Chief of the Grenadier Guards.
The reverse design features the four quarters of the Royal Arms, each depicted within a shield. In between each shield is one of the four emblems of the home nations – a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek – ¬and in the centre of the design is a crown. Inscribed around the edge of the coin are the words ‘FAITH AND TRUTH I WILL BEAR UNTO YOU’, which were included in the pledge of allegiance made by His Royal Highness Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh to The Queen during the coronation ceremony.
