2013 $1 60th Anniversary of End of the Korean War
The Korean War began on 25 June 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. Attrition warfare, reminiscent of the Western Front years before, ensued.
Fierce fighting continued right up until the last day of the conflict, which was signaled by the signing of an armistice on 27 July 1953 – three years and one month after the war began. The ending was so abrupt that some soldiers had to be convinced the conflict really was over.
This $1 coin produced by the Royal Australian Mint commemorates the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.
Its reverse, designed by Mint designer Aaron Baggio, symbolizes the signing of the armistice agreement between communist and United Nations leaders in 1953.
The depiction of a dove in flight and the word ‘peace’ in Korean is a reminder of the ultimate goal on the still-troubled peninsula.
